D’Spueniekämpfer
Volunteers from Luxembourg in the fight against fascism during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939)
This exhibition project invites visitors to explore the lives of the Spueniekämpfer – men and women from Luxembourg who volunteered to fight in the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939).
Organised by the students of the Master in Digital and Public History (MADiPH) at the University of Luxembourg, the exhibition offers a deeper understanding of a complex historical moment by giving a space to the Spueniekämpfer’s stories, their choices and motivations. At the same time, this part of Luxembourgish history is reflected on critically by looking at how these individuals have been remembered, interpreted, and contested over time.
Through a series of interconnected thematic sections, the visitor is guided from historical background to personal stories and broader societal reflections. By displaying personal objects (e.g. letters, photographs), archival materials (e.g. administrative documents, newspapers), and oral testimonies bring the history of the Spueniekämpfer to life.
