    General assembly – Esch

    B.P. 145 L-4002 Esch-sur-Alzette, Hôtel de Ville Esch-sur-Alzette

Zoe Konsbruck and Nicolas Arendt will be presenting their research about deindustralization during the general assembly of the Amis de l’histoire et du musée de la ville d’Esch-sur-Alzette (AHME). The presentations will be held in Luxembourgish and German.

Nicolas Arendt presents “Deindustrialization delayed? ARBED in the context of the post-socialist transformation in East Germany”. The project examines the ARBED takeover of the former socialist “Volkseigener Betrieb” Maxhütte in Unterwellenborn in Thuringia during the boom period in 1992. Through a comparison with the steel crisis in the 1970s and 1980s in Luxembourg, he will explain the similar changes in the planning and market economy in Western and Eastern Europe , even if it entails a different deindustrialization dynamic. It also shows that the takeover had a lasting impact on the development of the Luxembourg steelworks.

Everyone is warmly invited to come, listen and share their stories!
